The eight-story
building offers 2.1 million square feet, the size of almost 40 football fields
combined.
The new library will
house 1.5 million books, enough to fill nearly 2 football fields full.
The new library
provides enough books to read for 375 thousand days straight.
(The average book
takes an average reader 6 hours to read, with 1.5 million books it would take
someone 9 million hours to read the entire selection in the library, which
equates to 375,000 days straight worth of reading)
The concept of channeling is discussed in terms of tailoring
messages to audience self-interests. The NEW ZOO (real Green Bay Zoo) wants to
increase memberships and donations. Develop the message theme for the
following audiences:
a.
Business and industry
By providing donations to the
NEW ZOO, businesses and industries in the area are directly related to the NEW
ZOO in the public’s eye. A business sponsoring the zoo provides community
awareness of the company in a positive, family-oriented way.
b.
Teachers
The learning
opportunities provided by the NEW ZOO give teachers the ability to come
together in educating the youth. The NEW ZOO offers education on environmental
needs, a variety of species and the natural habits they need to sustain a heavy
population. Additionally, it is an exciting, educational adventure for your
students.
c.
Parents
A safe, education place to
bring your children and enjoy some quality family time is what the NEW ZOO
offers. Come experience what the zoo has to offer with other families.
d. Environmental and conservation groups
An increase involvement in the NEW ZOO can bring education to
the general public in regards to the needs in conversing the environment and
species in the world. With this it benefits these groups greatly as it brings
awareness.
As discussed in the book, relating to interests of each group is
critical. Additionally, making sure there are reliable sources such as someone
like themselves who shares their beliefs is also important. Lastly, provided
statistics also tends to work in the favor of a persuasive message.
1) It
is important to localize news if you want coverage in community newspapers.
Suggest a way to localize each of the following items:
a. A
national airline has just compiled the number of flights, mileage, and total
passengers carried last year.
Providing
a top 10 list of where most people travelled to or where they originated from
would allow people to not only take interest in it but feel connected to the
story.
b. A
computer company has introduced a new tablet computer.
Having
a product demonstration would allow people to engage directly with the product
and become interested.
c. A
national manufacturing company with plant sites in 100 different cities has
just announced its annual earnings and stock dividend.
Having
an award for all the hard work done and what the results are, if one of the
plants are in your town or city you can direct it towards the entire community
and make it about them and “their success”.
d. A
company has just developed a new GPS system integrated into their entire line
of cars.
Having
a special event or even a product demo would allow people to engage and become
interested, if it is made a big deal about people would come out and take
interest.
e. A
charitable agency has just released national figures on the number of Americans
afflicted with AIDS.
Show
numbers of people effected with it in the community, it makes it relatable and
close to come. Also consider a stunt something to raise donations like the ice
bucket challenge did. It engaged the audience and makes them not only feel
involved but feel directly related to the cause.
Leinenkugels is
interested in doing some sort of poll or survey that would generate media
coverage. What would you recommend and why?
It must be a topic
that attracts the audience’s interests. Being an adult beverage, it could be in
regards to money spent on alcohol, new flavors to be offered, something to do
with romance or sex that is directly related to the beverages name. It has to
be relatable.
1)
You are new at a job in public relations. You have been taught
to keep news releases factual and skip the hype. However, management wants you
to "jazz up" the news release and say the new product is, among other
things, "revolutionary." What would you do? Explain your answer.
There is a way of giving both
parties what they want. You can in a way “jazz up” the article and please
management so you can keep your job also while keeping it factual. While it
sounds silly, we may learn that something has to be done a certain way in
school in real life like at your first job in public relations, until you get
more experience try your best to stick to what you know and follow what is
told. As I said earlier, as long as you keep it honest and factual, add some
sparkles to it to please everyone involved.
2)
You are the public relations director of a repertory theater.
The city editor of the local daily calls you and asks if you could send him 10
complimentary tickets. He explains that his wife’s family is in town for the
weekend. What would you do? Explain your answer.
Send them the tickets
obviously. If you provide a positive experience for him he is likely to
recommend your business to others and maybe even write something in regards to
it. Having a good working relationship with someone like that is extremely
beneficial, assuming it is a give/take relationship on both ends it could
provide a great deal of success for everyone involved.
